New RFA Sumatran Arrives

We're delighted that 100% Rainforest Alliance certified coffee from some very special origins is starting to arrive at the roastery. These new crop arrivals are exciting in their unique quality dimensions, and contribute to the distinctive flavours and aromas that you can only find in Muskoka Roastery blends.

A good example is the new RFA Sumatra Mandheling Grade 1 from the Aceh province. In this part of Indonesia, coffee comes from small farmers rather than individual estates. It is semi-washed and then triple picked to sort out the very best quality beans...these are the ones we buy.

After the beans have been sorted by density or size, they are then sorted by colour. Teams of farm workers sort the beans by hand, discarding the beans that have any discolouration or lack of uniformity. Typically, the very best coffees are 'hand-cleaned' or sorted twice. Our supplier 'triple picks' which means that the workers sort it three times.

The coffee costs more because it is grown in line with strict Rainforest Alliance standards and because of the extra labour involved in triple picking. But, we believe the quality is worth it and that you appreciate the difference.
