Environmental Stewardship

The Muskoka Roastery environmental program has 3 focus areas.

Our goal is to reduce our waste each year in pursuit of our 0% target. The programs in place include:

  • jute bags donated to a local garden centre for covering shrubs and trees
  • skids re-used by our transport company or for outgoing shipments
  • coffee chaff (from roasting) and coffee grounds (from brewing) used for compost at a local organic vegetable farm
  • all plastics recycled
  • all paper products purchased by the Muskoka Roastery Coffee Company are FSC certified and are recycled after use

Our baseline in 2010 was 350 kg of waste for landfill. In fiscal 2011, we reduced this figure to just less than 100 kg, in a year where we experienced rapid growth. Still more than zero however, so our work is not done!

We have calculated our carbon footprint and are finalizing plans to align with a carbon offsetter to became a carbon neutral company in 2012.

We will post our progress on this initiative at each stage.

In 2012, part of the 2% re-investment in the community program is targeted to funding for programs that help protect the splendour of Muskoka’s water and forested land.

Projects that we have funded are featured in the Grassroots section.

Evaluation criteria can be found on the Funding Criteria page.
