Laurina Masterpiece
From the experimental heart of Daterra—one of the world’s most sustainable and forward-thinking coffee farms—comes something truly extraordinary: Laurina Masterpiece. Grown on a small, innovation-focused plot deep within Brazil’s Cerrado region, this rare varietal is cultivated not just with precision, but with vision.
The Masterpiece Series is Daterra’s crown jewel: a collection of tiny, one-of-a-kind microlots selected through the rigorous Daterra Penta Process®. Each year, their expert cuppers scour the estate for coffees with singular character—those that score 88+ and can never be replicated. The Laurina lot is no exception: nuanced, delicate, and breathtakingly unique.
Laurina is an exceptionally rare Arabica varietal, prized not only for its naturally low caffeine content—just 36% of the caffeine found in most Arabicas—but also for its refined, complex flavour profile. But cultivating Laurina is a labour of love. Its low caffeine levels make it highly susceptible to pests, and its yields are modest. Daterra believed in its potential enough to spend 25 years perfecting it.
This particular Laurina was processed using anaerobic natural fermentation—an exacting method where only the ripest cherries are sealed in stainless steel tanks with airlock valves. As the cherries ferment, they release CO₂, pushing out oxygen and creating a fully anaerobic environment. This allows specific microorganisms to flourish, encouraging enzymatic development and unlocking deep layers of sweetness, fruit, and complexity within the bean.
If Laurina were an artist ...
Laurina is a dreamer with dirt under her nails and stardust in her eyes. Raised in a secret garden deep in Brazil’s Cerrado, she paints with flavours instead of colours—soft strokes of sweetness, bright bursts of fruit, and whispers of something rare and golden. Fragile by nature but fearless in spirit, Laurina spends years perfecting each masterpiece, coaxing beauty from places most would overlook. Her work can’t be rushed, repeated, or rivaled. It simply exists, delicate and dazzling, like a once-in-a-lifetime bloom.
